PR Reps: Do's and Don'ts When Reaching Out to a Blogger

Warning: I'd like to warn you before you start reading that this is a very opinionated post. You may want to turn back now. After a year and a half of blogging, I think it's quite overdue because some people just really don't get it.

Yes I am a blogger, but first and foremost I am a person.
I am a mother.
I am a wannabe wifey girlfriend
I am a sister.
I am a daughter.
I am a friend.

I am also a small business owner, so I understand both sides. If you don't have the budget, then you don't get to advertise. I live through it every day. But please...
  • Do not reach out to bloggers and expect them to just post about your company.
It is rude to think that we just sit here and twiddle our thumbs all day. That is essentially what you are telling us when asking us to "introduce" your company or "spread the word" about a product or company. If I agreed to every request made of me, I wouldn't have time to take care of my house or my family. I already don't have enough time to balance blogging and jewelry making. Not to mention, would you work for free? I think not.

I know there is much controversy about "review bloggers" just getting "free stuff". This is so not true! We actually work writing the review and promoting a giveaway if applicable.

When reaching out to me {and even other bloggers because I know many feel this same exact way}
  • Do be courteous and please address me and my blog
  • Do not address me as someone else completely. That's a real turn off and I'll hit "delete".
  • Do proposition me with something that is beneficial to us both. I'm sure you don't want to send me your product and not get a post about it just as we don't want to work for free.
  • Do not constantly send over press releases and expect them to be published.
  • Do not send a story idea or want us to post something and give the line "because I know how hard it is to find content for your blog". Most of us don't have a problem finding content for our sites and this line is actually quite insulting.
  • Do not contact us asking to trade links. Ok, before you jump on me, hear me out. A blogger, I would be happy to trade links with. I have a special section on my blog just for that. But companies expect it too. Sorry, but that's advertising and that ad space isn't free!
That's all that I can think of for now. I will be doing another post soon on a similar subject.

I do have to add that I have worked with some very wonderful PR and companies alike. Your friendliness, helpfulness, professionalism and consideration is very appreciated. I just wish that the rest could learn by your example.

This is a great post and one that needs to be repeated again and again. We are not looking for "filler" material!

I have worked with so many great reps - I wish they could all teach the others how to do it right!

And don't let us pick which color or pattern and then send us your clearance print. If I wouldn't buy it I won't blog it!

You said it! I just got an email to day with a "hello, are you going to post this info I sent over to you last week?" Um...no...I work hard on my blog and it's MINE and not something I want to fill with clutter and crap and random (FREE!) advertising.

"because I know how hard it is to find content for your blog". < This one made me laugh.

I have no problem finding content that I feel my readers will be interested in reading. I do not need to put up content that has nothing to do with my blog. I do not share Press releases but will share information that will be useful to my readers or that they might want to participate in.

Love this! Hard to find content for your blog- yup, totally laughing.

I had a new one happen to me today. A PR rep who didn't refer to me by name asked for my stats to see if I would be a fit for their product. But, didn't even say what company or product. I will not blindly send someone my stats.

Well said, I get a lot of "I think your readers would like this...." and expect me to post for free. Once I send my prices, I am informed they DO NOT pay for that kind of stuff. Well then I do NOT do that kind of stuff.

Even after I have worked with a company they expect things for free and I do not mind sometimes but when it becomes a habit NO, I once won a nice item and I was so excited I posted about another giveaway they was having. Well EVERY week I was being sent a new giveaway to blog about. I finally just started ignoring the person and they got the hint.

Another favorite of mine is Dear Webmaster. My name is in all my posts and last I looked it WASNT webmaster.

These stories are unbelievable! I guess I'm pretty lucky to be one of the few blogs who do not get many pitches--and, surprise, surprise--I still manage to have content on my blog.

I did get asked once to make a post that violated FTC guidelines. When I politely refused, they sent an email back telling me how I could do it and not get caught violating the rules. And they didn't want to give me the name of the company until I agreed. Made me wonder if it wasn't a "fishing" expedition from someone from the FTC. It just seemed so wrong all around. But I held to my guns and after about four rounds of emails they went away.

This is great and much appreciated! I started doing reviews/giveaways a few months ago and I love it. I have noticed since my blog is getting bigger so are the emails with "we thought your readers would like you to post this" emails! I'm glad I am not the only one.

Well said!! I am trying to venture into this review/giveaway world, but am scared haha

I know it's ALOT of work because I have a couple of great friends who do blog giveaways and reviews..You have to be very well organized too!

Some companies just have no class!

I'll check out Jennifer's link too..thanks!

Bravo! Great post!

I get this all the time and couldn't agree more!!

Ashley Pichea said...

Definitely agree! I just published my first media kit, and I included a policy on reviews/giveaways in it to help companies know how to approach me. If they fail to do so according to my stated policy, I'll most likely hit "delete"!

I agree with everything you said except the wifey thing! ;-)

I hate doing work for free. Plus I'm a single mom so I actually Work outside of the home! UGH....

I am with you on this post too!

Oh oh! What about the "How about you post about this and if it gets enough views/sales then I'll send you something"

That one makes me so angry! Angry just thinking about it.

If you can't handle of the madness coming your way, feel free to forward them on to me. I am a soon to be unemployed blogger. I can write and post in understandable English as well.

I am not a blogger...I am a wannasomedaybeablogger. And I admit at first when I started reading blogs I thought WOW...that is so amazing people will just GIVE stuff to another like that, JUST for trying a product. Yah..duh...and then I started READING the blogs more. I also know now that as a blog reader it takes hours and hours of reading and re reading to find the best products, the best deals, the great reviewers AND hours per day of entering the contests if you stand a chance to "win" them. It really is a great way to market for ALL if everyone is appreciative and respectful.
