Joshilyn Jackson - gods in Alabama and Backseat Saints Review & Giveaway - 5 Winners {CLOSED}

About Joshilyn Jackson:

The Short Version: New York Times Bestselling novelist Joshilyn Jackson lives in Georgia with her husband, their two children, and way too many feckless animals. Her debut, gods in Alabama, won SIBA's 2005 Novel of the year Award and was a #1 BookSense pick. Jackson won Georgia Author of the Year for her second novel, Between, Georgia, which also a #1 BookSense pick, making Jackson the first author in BookSense history to receive #1 status in back to back years. Her third novel, The Girl Who Stopped Swimming, was a Break Out book at Target and has been shortlisted for the Townsend Prize for Fiction. All three books were chosen for the Books-A-Million Book Club.

When Arlene Fleet headed off to college in Chicago, she made three promises to God: She would never again lie, she would stop fornicating with every boy who crossed her path, and she'd never, ever go back to her tiny hometown of Possett, Alabama (the "fourth rack of Hell"). All God had to do in exchange was to make sure the body of high school quarterback Jim Beverly was never found.

Ten years later, Arlene has kept her promises, but an old school-mate has recently turned up asking questions. And now Arlene's African American beau has given her a tough ultimatum: introduce him to her family, or he's gone. As she prepares to confront guilt, discrimination, and a decade of deception, Arlene is about to discover just how far she will go to find redemption - and love.

gods in Alabama is a title that normally wouldn't catch my eye. I pictured it as a love story at first, then saw maybe it had that mystery and suspense I crave when I read. A few pages in and Joshilyn had me hooked on Arlene's character. Joshilyn Jackson had the power to real me in that fast with her fantastic storytelling. It was as if I was right there in the book with them, instead of reading through a whole other world.

How far would you run to find redemption?

Ro Grandee is the perfect Texas housewife. She's determined to be nothing like her long-missing mother, the one who left her with only a heap of old novels and her father's fists for company, so Ro keeps quiet and takes her husband's punches like a lady. But Ro wasn't always this way. Underneath her pastel skirts and hidden bruises lies Rose Mae Lolley, teenaged spitfire, Alabama heartbreaker, and a crack shot with a pistol. Rose Mae is resurrected when a gypsy's tarot cards foretell doom for dutiful Ro: her handsome husband is going to kill her. Unless she kills him first.

Armed with only her wit, her pawpy's ancient .45, and her dog Fat Gretel, Rose Mae hightails it out of Texas. In a journey that is by turns harrowing and exhilarating, she uncovers long buried truths about her family and herself, running from the man who will never let her go, on a mission to find the mother who did.

Taking a minor character from her bestselling gods in Alabama, Jackson has crafted a "riveting read that simply flies off the page with prose as luscious as sweet tea and as spicy as Texas chili. ..." -Library Journal; BACKSEAT SAINTS will dazzle readers with a fresh and heartwrenching portrayal of the lengths a mother will go to right the wrongs she's created, and how far a daughter will run to escape the demands of forgiveness.

Now I definitely suggest Backseat Saints as a must read after gods in Alabama. They have nothing to do with each other, but at the same time they do! Afterall Ro's guy that got away was created in that book.

Backseat Saints kept me turning the pages, so much so that most of my free time was spent reading that book. I love when a book does that to me, when it's so good that I cannot bear to put it down.

I love the storyline and would definitely love to see more of Ro and maybe see what sparks between her and her mother's landlord.

Backseat Saints and Gods in Alabama are both available for purchase at Amazon.com.

Softlips PURE 100% Natural Line Review & Giveaway {CLOSED}

I am all about lip moisture. I like my lips to constantly feel soft and moist, never rough and dry. I use lip moisturizer several times and day and can easily feel the difference if I don't. Softlips is definitely my favorite brand for lip moisturizer.

They recently came out with a new line that includes lip glosses, tinted lip balms, lip butter, and lip polish. They are definitely in the running for my favorite lip gloss now too!

I was sent all of the products shown above from the new Softlips PURE 100% Natural line. I immediately feel in love with the lip gloss. For some reason, I am starting to get away from regular lipstick more often and often finding myself turning to lip gloss instead. I really like the Softlips PURE shell pink sheer lip gloss. It makes my lips soft, silky and gorgeously pink! There are other colors available too such as coral charm and natural honestly. The lip butter is great for moisturizing and it {along with all of the Softlips PURE 100% Natural products} has SPF 15 to help protect my lips from the sun.

The lip polish amazed me. I couldn't believe how much a difference it made on my lips!They were softer than ever, and completely kissable! I love everything that I tried and Softlips has stood up to my standards and continues to be one of my favorite brands for all over lip care!

I Heard You

Loud and clear!

I suppose I can get the point when I put of a poll and in one day the results are 26 - 2! I thought I was making it easier, and less cluttered having the extra entry options on a separate page. I didn't realize so many people preferred them on the same page. I apologize for the way giveaway entries have been set up for the past few months. I'm happy to say that I listened to you all and have switched the bonus entries back to the main giveaway page!

Another Double Points Day for Giving Made Simple

Giving Made Simple will be coming to a close in the next couple of days. It's been wonderful for me working on this campaign and seeing all the hype about this contest and all of the charities involved. I participated in the Twitter party this week and had a lot of fun reading all the questions and comments to the charities involved.

Tomorrow, April 30th will be another "Double Points Day" on Twitter. This is the second double point day, the first was on April 16th. What's really great about these days is that you can make your vote matter even if you're not a Sam's Club member. Just make sure to include @samsclub and the charity hashtag of your choice in the tweet and your vote will be counted!

Don't forget to enter to win one of 2 {two} $50 Sam's Club Gift Cards while you're here!

One vote will be defined as a Twitter update occurring between 12:00 a.m. – 11:59 p.m. CST on April 16 and again between 12:00 a.m. – 11:59 p.m. CST on April 30 that includes an @samsclub reply and incorporates the designated hashtag for one of 8 charities participating in Giving Made Simple. Only one Twitter vote will be counted per Twitter user on April 16 and April 30, including votes from each charity’s official Twitter profiles as well as votes from employees and volunteers of those organizations. Retweets of a charity’s hashtag will count as a vote per unique user.

Here are the hashtags to use for each charity:

  • KIVA: #Sams4Kiva
  • CFED: #Sams4CFED
  • CRF: #Sams4CRFUSA
  • ACCION: #Sams4AccionUSA
  • JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT: #Sams4JA
  • NFTE: #Sams4NFTE
  • YMCA: #Sams4YMCA
  • GIRLS INC. #Sams4GirlsInc

Sam’s Club provided me with two $50 gift cards to give away to my readers and one $100 gift card for my participation in this campaign throughout the month of April. Sam's Club Grim Grill Contest - How Grim is Your Grill?

Ah, summertime... One of my favorite parts of Summer is being able to cook out on the grill and having backyard bbq parties. Good food, good friends and tons of fun!

Unless of course, your grill looks like the one above and is suffering the Grim Grill syndrome.. Then maybe backyard parties are more embarrassing than fun to you. I don't blame you, really. It's not your fault that ugly old grill is held together with duct tape and it only has 3 legs. Who can help all those ugly rust stains. Or maybe the whole thing is an ugly rust color instead of black now. You could always paint it, you know. {Please note that the sorry looking grill above is not mine, the photo is courtesy of the Sam's Club site}

Or you could try to win a new one so you could take that nasty one currently sitting in your yard to the scrap yard. Sam's Club is holding a Grim Grill Contest and you could have a chance to win this awesome new grill and a $100 Sam's Club gift card! ARV of Grand Prize is $1,400! One runner up will receive a smaller grill and $40 Sam's Club gift card, ARV of $240. To enter this contest, simply head over to Sam's Club Spring website where you can upload a picture of that sorry looking grill of yours and submit a story {500 words or less} about why you're in need of a new grill.

The Grim Grill contest ends on May 10, 2010 at 12:00:01 PM ET. After the contest ends, A panel of judges from Rockfish Interactive & Sam’s Club will review all eligible entries and select 10 submitted entries to be submitted to a panel for judging. The 10 finalist entries will be selected based on criteria including:

  • How well the entry conveys the subject: Grim Grill, and why the entrant is deserving of a new grill
  • Quality of image and text description
  • Entry originality.
The 10 selected entries will be posted on the Sam's Club microsite from May 13th- May 20th, 2010. Then guess what happens? They will be judged by the Sam’s Club Sharing the Savings Blogging Community! That means, I get to help choose a winner along with 10 other bloggers. I'm pretty excited for that!

Sam's Club will be providing me with a $200 Gift card for postings in April and May. Sam's Club has the right to swap out the prize for whatever reason. There are just enough spaces for all 4 of us and I can include schedules, chores and anything else i need to keep track of. I can also plan meals and there is a note section. The Write ‘N Wipe Monthly lets me easily keep track of important dates and it's washable so the kids are even able to put stuff on there.

Then I have a Family To-Do Magnetic Notepad to keep track of anything I need and a Stay-in-Touch Address Book to keep track of all my contacts. Mother's Day Gift ideas - Things Remembered "Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong Heart Shaped Music Box Review & Giveaway {CLOSED}

If you've been around my blog for awhile, you probably remember a few different reviews of beautiful engraved gifts from Things Remembered. I have been lucky enough to review some special gifts from them like a charm bracelet, mouse pad and snow globe. I have loved every one of the personalized gifts I received.

Mother's Day is just around the corner, and Things Remembered has some wonderful gift ideas. Searching their site, I came across this Sterling Butterfly Family Necklace w/ Free Keepsake Box and I just fell in love! I just adore butterflies and if I opened up a gift like this from my kids, I'd probably hug them all day long! I wouldn't be able to wipe the big cheesy smile off my face! Besides this necklace, they have quite an assortment to offer. You can have each piece engraved to make it extra special.

Music boxes are always another great gift idea for Mother's Day or really any occasion. all of us women need a special place to keep our little trinkets! For my review I received the "Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong Heart Shaped Music Box. Of course I immediately opened it up and checked it out. It was wrapped so nicely in tissue, so there were no worries about scratches. It is absolutely breathtaking! Everything's beautifully engraved and I was almost afraid to touch it! I opened it up and there's a place for rings on one side and other trinkets on the other. The switch for the music box is inside so you never have to turn it over!

Canopies, Flowers and Bikes, Oh My!

It all started with the canopy for the gazeebo. It's finally getting nice enough {not so windy} so we could put it up without worrying about it being too windy and getting ruined. That's what happened to the last one we had. The wind ripped it to shreds! The Man and I spent some time putting that up, then the screen had to go on.

He decided he wanted to go catch a bullfrog, so I was going to drop him off and head to Menards. I bribed him into flowers, lucky me!

Then he decided he'd like to go get the boys some new bike tires since they each had a pooped tire on their bikes. We went to K Mart right down the road. They only had mountain bike tires. Do we stopped at Dunham's a few blocks away. They had a 20", but no 18". Who knew a simple journey would turn into so much!

So I was going to come home and take Lil Man to Walmart with me and get a tire. Well we get here, and he decides he'd like to check out bikes online and see what they have, so maybe he could just get him a new one. He's had his current bike for about 2 years and it's not in the greatest of shape. He's a boy. A. Very. Destructive. Boy. The man finds one, but I think it's too much. So he decides he better go with so I don't get him a cheap bike. Like I would really do that, c'mon! {Really I probably would have, shh!}

We all piled in the truck and headed to Walmart. We found him a bike, only $10 cheaper than the one I said was too much. He loves it, and we like seeing our kids happy. I did get my flowers, but my budget was cut by about $50 thanks to the bike. He's lucky I love him! Just kidding of course.

We got home, started watering the grass and pulling weeds in one of the gardens. I didn't plant my flowers yet, because we need to get a little fence to keep the dog out. Every year he tramples my flowers, and it's not going to happen this year!

But I'm happy, he's happy, the man never got to go catch a bullfrog and Big Bro is happy too. He got a new tire, new grips and him and dad are ripping his bike apart as we speak to give it a cool paint job. So I think now that the man's got a project going, he's happy too! Gotta love father/son projects!

So today's been a great day. WE got a lot accomplished and actually spent some quality family time together just doing stuff around the house :)

Paper to Pearls Review and Giveaway {CLOSED}

I have found what I think to be one of the coolest ideas ever in jewelry making! I am so happy to share this one with you, because it's more than just a cool idea, with cool products. It's for a good cause!

About Paper to Pearls:
Paper to Pearls was the unexpected outcome of a trip that Voices for Global Change president Barbara Moller made to northern Uganda in the fall of 2005. Barbara went as one of a team of trainers on a U.S. State Department project to create a coalition of local municipal officials and civil society leaders that would lobby and advocate nationally and internationally on behalf of the region.

Joyce Laker, one of the participants in the training, invited Barbara to visit two displaced persons camps where she had started a small beading project. Utilizing a grant she had obtained from CARE International, Joyce had recently brought a trainer from Kampala, the Ugandan capital, to train women in the two camps in how to make necklaces from recycled paper. She thought that sales of necklaces on the streets of Gulu, the local town, would be a way to help the women. The money wouldn't be much, but it would be something.

Barbara, however, saw it differently. What she saw was an opportunity to provide significant income for the women if she could create a market for their work. Two months later Paper to Pearls was born. Although starting with no experience in micro-enterprise or retail sales, Barbara saw the initiative as a natural extension of the mission of Voices for Global Change―to help give a "voice" to those who have traditionally been silent. In this case, by helping lift desperately marginalized women out of poverty, it would be giving them a voice in their future and the future of their families and communities.

When I was contacted by Paper to Pearls to review their product, of course I was in. I am a bead addict and who could say no! Then I went to the site and started looking around. I read all of the information about paper to pearls, how it was started and who benefits. I was moved by this, touched at the very bottom of my heart. These woman make some absolutely gorgeous jewelry, and all out of recycled paper! That amazed me.

So as I mentioned above, Paper to pearls not only helps people who really truly need it, but they make some stunning jewelry. The picture to the left features an assortment of different necklaces offered on the site. They also have many bracelets and earrings to choose from. Can you believe that these super cool and stylish necklaces are made with paper? I almost couldn't! It amazes and baffles me at the same time. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I have never heard of paper beads before, and I already admitted to being a bead addict!

I had a really hard time deciding what I would like to review. There were so many necklaces that I really liked. Then on the very last page, I finally decided. Since I love beads and I love coming up with new designs even more, I thought the Bag o' Beads would be perfect for me to review instead of an actual piece of jewelry. That way I could get a feel for the raw bead, and come up with my own design!

My Bag o' Beads arrived and the assortment above is an actual shot from my camera. Look at all those beads! i couldn't believe how many were in the package. I must have studied those beads for like 1/2 hour just in awe, that what I was actually looking at was just plain paper at one time. I mean take a look, would you even think paper? No way! These beads are breathtaking.

I have been extremely busy lately and haven't really had the time for my beads and jewelry that I'd like to have. So I haven't been able to make the necklace that I have in mind yet. I will be going up to the farm this weekend though {possibly with no kids!} so I just might take all my beads and stuff with me. I bet the peace and quiet of the country would give me some great inspiration.

Ok, yes I like to ramble. Sorry! These cute little earrings to the left are something I just whipped together especially for this review. I just love them and I really like the purple/pink, blue and tan mix!

Buy It!

You can buy the Bag o' Beads for $25, which includes 230 beads!

First of all I want to thank each and every one of you for helping to make the Leap into Spring event such a success. And of course not without all of you entering the giveaways either!

The Step into Summer event starts in about a month. It would be great if you could go grab the button to snag your extra entries and help us spread the word!

So now onto the winners. I know you have all been patiently awaiting this Hoover winner! I wish I could pick everyone, but I can't! Now if you didn't win, don't fret. Just head over to Eighty MPH Mom and enter her giveaway!

I have decided to screenshot the winner because I certainly don't want anyone to get mad and accuse me of cheating. Not saying any one of you would {I would sure hope not} but I'd prefer to cover my ass since there's so much shit talk about blogger cheating and all.

Review & Giveaway - BedHead Pajamas Pastel Wildflower Classic Sateen PJ {CLOSED}

Renee Claire grew up in a small town in southern Ontario, Canada called Amherstburg. She spent time in the cold winters sewing clothes for herself in the basement, honing her sense of color, pattern and cloth and dreaming of being a clothing designer, living the California lifestyle as seen in photographs and on television.

In 1981, after college, Renee decided to load up her van with her few possessions and head to Los Angeles where she waited on tables in numerous restaurants by night, designing her dress and outwear collection by day. In the late 90's public interest in dresses declined and was replaced by sportswear and as Renee was delivering what she considered to possibly be her last collection of dresses to a local retailer, she saw a pair of pajamas in the window of the boutique and thought, "I could top that!". After scouring the marketplace she quickly realized that the current pajama offerings lacked sophistication and fine tailoring. She quickly learned how to make her own colored and patterned cotton textiles. As a consequence, BedHead was born!

I love pajamas. I could live in them. They're just so comfy, especially when you're just lounging around. I could stay in my pj's forever. In fact, my whole family loves pj's. We love to be comfy

BedHead Pajamas offers so many different styles, colors and patterns for the whole family. I can easily shop for us all at one place.

The website is so easy to navigate. You can browse through fabrics like stretch and flannel. You can browse between, mens and kids too. They even offer gorgeous bedding!

I received the Pastel Wildflower Classic Sateen PJ for my review. I have to say these are some of the most comfortable pajamas I've owned. They're a bit stretchy, so they give a more relaxed fit. Nothing is too snug and the bottoms of the pants are really wide. I love that about them because they're never too tight down there. The fabric is super soft too.

They sent along a few fabric samples for me to feel and see too. The fabric is all so luxurious and some of the colors and designs are so vibrant!

So what do plan on getting your mom or other special woman in your life for Mother's Day this year? I bet a pair of pajamas from BedHead Pajamas would put a smile on her face and make her day!

Buy It!

You can buy the Pastel Wildflower Classic Sateen PJ for $138. I do have a great discount code to offer you too! Use code 3TO1 at checkout to get 15% off your online purchase through May 10th.

The Giveaway!

How would you like to win a pair of Pastel Wildflower Classic Sateen PJs? I have a pair to give away to one lucky contestant! For your first main entry head over to BedHead Pajamas and tell me your favorite pair of pajamas. This step must be done before you can qualify for extra entries.
