The market for good children’s music is pretty slim in my opinion. Those Kid’s Bop commercials always seemed to disturb me because I know what most of that music is actually about and to see children dancing to music directed more for adults just doesn’t sit with me well. I’m more of an independent genre woman regardless. I like the style, I admire how they not only create the lyrics but the music as well; which is something that Pop doesn’t do generally. In my home good music is admired as one of the greatest art-forms. My uncle is a musician, my husband is a musician and I sing on the tiles of my kitchen stage with a wooden spoon.
I chose to review “In the Family Garden” by Billy Kelly initially because I like the reason some of the songs were written. Such as, “That Old American Flag” which is based on a true story about a father and son project of erecting a 25 foot flag pole outside Billy’s childhood home or the title song, “In the Family Garden”, which is written as an ode to the joys of digging in the dirt with the family. I loved that there were stories, the fact that the artwork was very cute (my toddler LOVES the cover art) and from the moment I began listening to it, I loved the CD.
It begins with a funny snippet and in between they have the same pauses where they joke around for a moment. There used to be these same things on old tapes and CDs when I was a teenager and we loved that about them. You got to hear your idol or your crush laughing or messing up. I thought this was so wonderful! My children may not understand but they did think it was amusing. Out of all the songs my personal favorite was “We Could Be Penpals” co-written with Molly Ledford of the band Lunch Money. It’s something I would put on my own mp3 player! What’s more important is that my husband actually liked it and he is one of those extremely particular music connoisseurs and even my teenage son who hates everything I listen to! I sing along to “In the Family Garden” in the kitchen with my wooden spoon to the delight of my two year old. He is a great audience! However, you could go see the real thing if you happen to catch the end of his tour.
