Celebrate National Pound Cake Day march 4th - Pound Cake Giveaway and Packed Paninis Recipe! {CLOSED}

Mmmm, dessert. My mouth is watering now. I'm trying to watch what I eat lately, but I can't help but be tempted by desserts. Lucky for me {and for you too!}, soon I'll have an excuse to give in.

Did you know that there is a National Pound Cake Day? I sure didn't!

But it's true. March 4th is National Pound Cake Day. That's next Friday, so there is still plenty of time to get your goodies and celebrate this fun and delicious event!

Sara Lee offers a variety of different pound cake options, including a reduced fat one! They also offer several yummy pound cake recipes right on their website! They all look so delicious so it was really hard to decide which one I wanted to make in celebration of National Pound Cake Day. As indecisive as I am, I finally came up with one that I'll share with you below!

Packed Paninis

Pound cake is filled with a sweet mixture of peanut butter and cream cheese and is grilled to perfection.

*Prep Time:
20 min
* Cook Time:
10 min

Ingredients

* 1 (16 ounces) package Sara Lee® Frozen Pound Cake
* 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
* 3 ounces cream cheese softened
* 2 tablespoons caramel topping
* 1/4 cup butterscotch chips
* 1/4 cup raisins
* 1/4 cup pecans chopped
* 1 small banana sliced
* 2 tablespoons butter melted

Directions

1. Cut pound cake into 16 slices.
2. Combine peanut butter, cream cheese and ice cream topping, mixing until well blended. Stir in butterscotch chips, pecans and banana.
3. Spread one pound cake slice with peanut butter mixture; cover with second slice of pound cake. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
4. Brush both sides of the panini with butter. Grill sandwich on a panini grill about 2-3 minutes or until crisp and golden brown.

Cook’s Tip: If you don’t have a panini grill you can use a large non-stick skillet to cook the sandwiches.

Yoga Socks - Creative Clutter!

I can't believe another week has gone by. There are so many days, I just want things to slow down (or to win the lotto!!). This week I am knitting Yoga Socks! I am making them for an auction/fundraiser at my kids school. A lot of the mom's are into yoga (I would be too, if I only had the time - love it when I make it to a class). I got this pattern free at Michael's at least a year ago. As I was making the first one, I somehow lost the pattern, but was able to find it for FREE on line (See below for the link).

I am a knitter, but tend to like to knit with needles no smaller than a size 7 (wish that was my pants size too!). So, socks are not my thing (plus my feet are always hot). However, when I saw these I had to give them a try. I had never used double pointed needles before....it was a piece of cake (even though it takes a round or two to get use to them).

This is a picture of one of the Yoga sock in "the making."

This is a picture of the same sock above, but where I am using the 4th needle to actually knit with. When I was first trying to figure out how to knit with double pointed needles, I didn't realize you were suppose to use a 4th one as a needle that you knit onto. I was trying to only knit with the 3 needles and it was difficult and tight.

Here is a picture of one of the finished Yoga Socks. If my toe nails were painted, I would model it for you (see photo above for a fabulous picture of the sock on a person).

Supplies:
Yarn - 2 skeins of Patons Kroy Socks (50 g/1.75 oz). I used Summer Moss Jacquard #55612 like the model did.
Needles - Se of four double pointed knitting needs U.S. 3 (3.25mm) or size needed to obtain tension.
Skill - Easy, it is just knit and purl stitches.

Additional instructions - the pattern it says, " rep last 8 rnds for texture pat until work from beg measures approx 4 ins (10 cm), ending on a 4th or 8th rnd of pat. This was 32 rows of the working pattern for me (or 4 times through the 8 rounds).
Near the end of the instructions - the pattern says, "beg on 2nd rnd, work approx 2 1/2 ins (6cm) in texture pat ending on a 1st or 5th rnd of pat. This was 28 rows of the working pattern for me (starting with row 2 (row 1 already knitted) + 28 = 29 rows. There are 8 rows in the round - so 3 rounds plus 5 (ending on the 5th row).

My sister made these and she used size U.S. 2 double pointed needles. She loves making socks and using tiny needles! Her work is so amazing.

For FREE pattern, click here.

Keep in mind there are lots of on-line/youtube tutorials to help you learn to knit. Give it a try. I always have a knitting project with me. Whenever I am waiting on others (like at school, practice, games, etc.) I whip out my knitting. I feel I am not "wasting" time since I hate to sit idle.

Thanks for stopping by this week. Remember, I love comments! Please let me know what you think of the Yoga Socks!

"Exploiting My Baby" by Teresa Strasser Review & Giveaway!

"Exploiting My Baby" by Teresa Strasser has won my heart. Teresa uses her pregnancy, her childbirth and her own difficult past to weave an amazing memoir that will have you both sighing in relief that someone finally understands you to laughing until tears are rolling down your cheeks.

When I had my first child I was too young to pay attention to anyone but my own Mother and as I was living with her and she seemed to know everything I didn't bother reading many books. However, when I had my second 11 years later I felt as though I didn't know a thing and picked up a lot of books that made me feel very inadequate and ignorant of something I was already doing.  I was once again new to the entire experience and this time alone without anyone to tell me what to do because I was supposed to already have known.

I went to the internet, much the same as Mrs. Strasser and was just as unnerved, worried and irritated as she was trying to find information. My first was a breeze that never caused me all the headaches most pregnancies caused but my second gave me every awful symptom from heartburn and bloating to sciatica and gestational diabetes. I wish I had this book on my nightstand as a comforting friend whispering in my ear every night understanding wisdom and helping me to feel a little less awful with her "People I Want To Punch" excerpts to make me laugh away my feelings of inadequacy. In fact I actually held off writing this review just so I could take this book to the hospital with me for my "Pain Management" appointment. I felt so close to her stories that I wanted to bring them with me since I was going in alone and I thought that at least I'd have this person who knows how embarrassing and how frightening some doctors appointments are.

Teresa Strasser, through this amazing and wonderful Memoir, removed years of secret guilt's I've had on my heart since I first had gotten pregnant with my son Judah 2 1/2 years ago. I wanted to run out and buy hundreds of copies and stand outside of every hospital just to hand them to all the new Moms I could find. I don't have the funds for that though! But I can give one of these books to one of you Mommy's out there and maybe this book will erase your secret guilt's, maybe it'll make a new pregnant woman venturing off into the Mommy world feel a little less alone or that Mommy crying over a bowl of ice-cream mixed with peanut butter feel a little less inadequate knowing that not all Moms are perfect. At the very least it will uplift your heart, make you laugh and fall in love with her. Teresa Strasser is an award-winning writer with a very blunt, sometimes vulgar and shocking honesty but at the end of the book she will be your secret imaginary friend.

Roasted Rosemary Chicken Recipe - Manda's Meals

What You Need:

1 Whole Chicken
1 tsp of Rosemary
1 tsp of Oregano
3 tbsp of Butter or Margerine (or Oleo as my Grandmother calls it)
1 sprig of Sage or Thyme (optional - also a sprig is just one "stick")
1 tsp of Salt
1 tsp of Pepper

Wash the Chicken and pat dry before placing on a baking pan or roaster. I decided to use a baking pan as it's universal. I suppose you could also use a cake pan as it looks like a baking pan just put foil down first.

Put 1 tbsp of Butter or Alternative into the cavity of the chicken with the sprigs of Sage & Thyme. If you do not have the sprigs you can always just add an extra pinch of Rosemary & Oregano. Melt the other 2 tbsp of butter with the Rosemary, Oregano, Salt and Pepper. This will be your baste. Slather it all over the Chicken in every crease and under the skin, where capable and place it back on the pan.

Cover the pan with foil or put the top on your roaster and cook for 1hr and 30min or until the temperature of the Chicken exceeds 165' to 180'. If the chicken can be pulled off with a fork then you know it's done.

Viola! Since that was so simple I decided I would just put a little extra recipe below.

NO Way to Mess Up Mashed Potatoes

Wash & peel two potatoes per adult, one per child and cut into cubes, wash and drain again. In this case I used six potatoes. Boil the potatoes on high until you can part it with a fork without effort. Drain and Mash the potatoes with 2 tbsp of Butter (or alt). Once the potatoes are mashed thoroughly then pour in 1 cup of Milk and stir until they are creamy. Add Salt & Pepper to taste. Now you have a meal!

Please make sure to wash your hands when handling raw or uncooked Chicken for the safety of your guests, family and yourself.

Kids Say - Fairy Wings

Photobucket

Kids say the funniest things sometimes, so this weekly tribute is all about them. If you'd like to play along just grab the button code and write your own "Kids Say" post. Don't forget to come back here to link up every Sunday so everyone can check out your post, and you can visit other "Kids Say" posts!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I got a pair of Fairy Wings last year when the new Tinker Bell movie came out. They've been in my closet this whole time and the kids found them last night. They've both been running around the house with the fairy wings like real little "fairies". They are boys, but I'm not worried. They are just having fun and really there's no harm in that.
Lil Man is sitting in the recliner right now watching Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He just said in a serious, yet excited voice "I'm gonna go to sleep tonight and when I wake up, I'm gonna have my real wings!"
Totally hilarious! He cracks me up!
The Hub is Featuring G.I. Joe: Renegades and Family Game Night Marathons for President's Day
Tide, Febreze and $10 Target Gift Card Giveaway {2 Winners} {CLOSED}
Do your kids play hard?
Mine sure do. I seem to be constantly doing laundry. I have to watch everything that I put in the washer for stains too, which can be quite a pain. They have some clothes that stains are impossible to get out of. I especially have problems with their active wear.
Target and Procter and Gamble have teamed up to help with that issue though.
  • Tide® Plus Febreze Freshness Sport™ is designed to help remove tough stains and odors from clothes that take the hardest hits. It helps leave your entire load clean and fresh, which can eliminate the need to purchase specialty products or wash your active wear separately. What a convenience, right? And, what’s more, it’s renewing freshness technology releases freshness as you move -- giving you added confidence on the court, in the field or at the gym.
  • Febreze® SPORT Extreme Odor Eliminator™ with Sweat X Technology helps eliminate lingering sports odors. It is specifically formulated to eliminate sweat odors on shoes, apparel and gear.
  • C9 by Champion™, an active wear line available exclusively at Target stores and Target.com.
I was able to check out some of these products. I got a sample for the Tide Plus Febreze Freshness Sport which smells absolutely amazing! It works well and makes even the raunchiest of clothes smell good. I picked up some more of that as well as the Febreze SPORT Extreme Odor Eliminator with Sweat X Technology with my Target Gift Card.
I have always been a big fan of Febreze and this new one sure didn't disappoint. It eliminated some of the nastiest smells, like the inside of winter snow boots. I can't wait to take this along camping because I'm sure it will do wonders on the bedding inside of a musty tent.
The Giveaway: How would you like to win a prize pack that includes a sample of Tide Plus Febreze Freshness Sport, coupons ($4.50 in total savings) for Tide Plus Febreze Freshness Sport, Febreze SPORT Extreme Odor Eliminator and C9 active wear (redeemable at Target stores nationwide) AND a $10 Target Gift Card? I have one to give away to two lucky contestants!
The Book of Tomorrow - Book Review and Giveaway! {CLOSED}
THE BOOK OF TOMORROW is the story of sixteen-year-old Tamara Goodwin, a wealthy girl whose world is turned upside down when her father dies and leaves behind nothing but bitter memories and debts. Forced to sell everything they have, she and her mother move to the country where it is hard to embrace a lifestyle completely alien from the ultra-posh life they have enjoyed in the city. Bored and lonely, Tamara visits a traveling library, where she discovers a strange leather-bound book. When she pries open its locked, golden clasp, she finds something unimaginable: diary entries written in her own hand, dated the next day. When the events of the following day mirror those predicted by the diary, Tamara decides to use this fantastic book to her advantage. But as she sets out to unravel family mysteries using the magic of the book of tomorrow, she discovers that some secrets are perhaps better left concealed.
In addition to P.S. I Love You, written when she was twenty-one, Ahern is the author of Love, Rosie; If You Could See Me Now; There’s No Place Like Here; Thanks for the Memories; and The Gift, which have collectively sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. The daughter of Ireland ’s former prime minister, she lives in Dublin .
The critics in the UK , where the book was an instant #1 bestseller agree, “Ahern provides magic in spades,” says The Guardian. THE BOOK OF TOMORROW is a “magical, absorbing tale,” echoes Closer magazine.
My Review: I absolutely loved this book. This is not like her chic-lit book, P.S. I Love You (and I love chic-lit). The hardest thing with this book for me was to put it down. I was up too late too many nights reading this book! I was completely pulled into the story. I think the best way to describe this book is a “magic-infused suspense novel.” It is filled with twists and turns that had me wanting more.
The main character, Tamara, is a spoiled brat whose father commits suicide. Tamara and her mother are forced to move to the country and live with her Uncle Artie and Aunt Rosaleen. The people that enter her life through the book and the lessons she learns just keeps you wanting more. Tamara soon realizes that she is responsible for her actions and learns some very valuable lessons. My favorite character that she meets is Sister Ignatius. I wish I knew someone like her in my life.
Aloha Friday - Whatcha Watching?
Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday.
In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that you take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So Kailani thought that on Fridays she would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response. If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!
My question this week is:
What TV shows are you currently addicted to?
I have been on an HGTV kick for a couple of months now. it's pretty much the only channel I watch. I love House Hunters, Property Virgins and all those fun decorating/home improvement shows!
Butterfly Bookmark
Supplies Used: Paper from DCWV All About Girls Stack pack and StampinUp Perfect Plum
Die cut: Paper Trey Ink Bookmark
Punch – 1 ½ and 1 ¼ inch circles by Creative Memories
Stamp: All Booked Up by Paper Trey Ink
Ink: True Black by Paper Trey Ink
Ribbon: Certain Celery Grosgrain by StampinUp
Adhesive: Xyron machine, ATG 714, StampinUp pop dot
I first started out cutting the 4.5 x 6 inches piece of butterfly paper I selected from DCWV All About Girls Stack pack and cut it in half (2.25 x 6 inches).
Next, I ran each piece through the xyron machine. A xyron machine will make a “sticker” out of the paper. The ENTIRE side facing down will be covered in a very sticky adhesive. You can purchase a xyron machine in a lot of different sizes at any craft store (Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, AC Moore, Joane’s – remember to use a coupon).
Next, I used the Provo Craft Cuttlebug (die cut machine) and the Paper Trey Ink bookmark die cut to actually cut out the bookmark. When using the Cuttlebug, always start out with the A plate (they are labeled), B plate, die cut facing up, paper, and C plate. This will put enough pressure on the die as it is run through the Cuttlebug.
Crank the plates, dies and paper through the machine all together and ta-da….you have a bookmark all cut out.
I punched a 1 ½ inch circle out of cream glitter card stock (DCWV pack that matched All that Girl) with my Creative Memory circle punch. I punched a 1 ¼ inch circle out of StampinUp Perfect Plum paper with my Creative Memory circle punch (both sizes come on one punch). Again, punches can be purchased at any craft store.
On the Perfect Plum circle I stamped “Let me Save your Spot” from Paper Trey Ink’s All Booked Up stamp set in True Black ink. I covered the back of the cream glitter circle with my ATG 714 adhesive gun (I could have used my xyron machine, but I wasn’t thinking) and adhered it to the bookmark.
Using StampinUp’s pop dots, I adhered the Perfect Plum circle to the cream glitter circle. The pop dot gave the “saying” just a little lift without it being too high where it would “dent” any book pages.
Lastly, I used Certain Celery grosgrain ribbon from StampinUP to make a “streamer” at the top of the bookmark.
This bookmark (and others I need to make this weekend – so check out www.peaceandscrapbooking.blogspot.com Monday) will be part of a “book basket” that will be auctioned off during the March fundraiser. I have donated several “book baskets” and each one will have a bookmark included.
Thanks for stopping by!
Find Savings at CouponSnapshot
Since Ashley started writing here, I have really wanted to learn how to use coupons and save money. I know that it can be a timely process, but in the end I could save a ton of money. I could put that money saved towards things we want or need. I could even save it up and maybe one of these days we could take a nice little family vacation. Now that sounds like fun!
I recently came across CouponSnapshot and it seems like a great site to find deals on. You can browse through coupons for certain stores and even search top travel and shoe deals. The possibilities really are endless with this site! You can even find great television, phone and internet bundling values at CouponSnapshot too. I found quite a few deals for an AT&T U-verse Coupon Code which could potentially save you a ton of money.
Now I don't know about you, but I'm all about saving a little green wherever I can. I'm getting a little sick of my cable provider and I just may end up making the switch myself.
I was compensated for my time in writing this post. Opinions expressed are my own or my families and are not influenced by any form of compensation. Take it or leave it. Click here to view my full acknowledgment policy.
Chuggington "Let's Ride the Rails" DVD Review & Giveaway! {CLOSED}
When asked to do a review on the new "Chuggington" DVD "Let's Ride the Rails" I was so excited! My son not only loves trains (he has his own train set) but he also has all these cars with faces so I knew he would love it! "Chuggington" is directed by Sarah Ball, who won a BAFTA award for her work as director and writer of Bob the Builder so I was even interested. "Chuggington" also has a fully interactive website and Judah was excited to not only watch the show but also to see his favorite characters on the computer. I can't wait to include the books since he loves to hold his books while watching his shows.
"Chuggington airs on Playhouse Disney, Disney's earning focused programming block. It's a CGI animated TV series that follows the amusing adventures of three young trainees, Wilson, Brewster andKoko, as they learn to "ride the rails" of life and become productive chuggers. Featuring a dynamic fleet of relatable and diverse characters, each engaging episode of "Chuggington" is filled with positive life lessons that encourage and promote early social skills."
I know Judah is a little young to be learning life lessons at 2 years old and that he probably doesn't grasp most of it but the ideas of friendship and teamwork are absorbed by even little guys like him and as he gets older he will be able to understand what he is empathetically associating with the characters actions. "Chuggington" is going to be one of the DVDs played over and over and over again in my house. I'm pleased to say that MORE DVDs are heading our way! "Chuggers to the Rescue", "It's Training Time" and "Wheels to the Rails" are scheduled to 'head out of the station' soon. And if you just can't possibly wait to get your OWN Chuggington "Let's Ride the Rails" DVD for your Chugger then you can always win it!
Buy It!
