What's Eating Your Child by Kelly Dorfman, MS, LND Review & Giveaway! {CLOSED}

What's Eating Your Child? by Kelly Dorfman is an eye opener, a brilliant must have book of sound advice packed with useful information for parents. She seems to be capable of knowing exactly what we're going to think of before we even carry the thought to fruition. I realized this between the moment I read the title and after finishing the forward by Richard E. Layton, MD; a Pediatric Allergy Specialist that opens the book by telling you how well educated, informed and important Kelly Dorfman's book truly is.

"Over the past fifteen years that I have been working with Kelly, I have been amazed at how intuitive and bright she is. She is a true Sherlock Holmes. Her ability to listen to a history and use her common sense, brain, and intuition to determine the source of a problem is truly remarkable. She has taught me an enormous amount about nutrition and how important the right diet and supplements are to attain optimal health. When it comes to the patients in my practice, I have more confidence in Kelly's opinion than that of anyone else in medicine. She is brilliant."

The words from Doctor Layton made me realize that this wasn't another hokey book that was going to tell me everything we were doing wrong with our families diet. It was an informed book backed by a pediatric allergist with other comments by a pediatric neurologist and a neurodevelopement pediatrician. By putting the Forward by a seasoned pediatrician Kelly Dorfman seemed to know that parents need to feel that what they are reading is medically sound and not just a personal opinion. She continues throughout the entire book to shock you with this way of knowing what you are going to think. She knows what you have tried with your children, what you may have said to them or all the reasons or excuses you make up for their diets. Most important, however, she never points a finger, she never says you are wrong and instead says I understand while helping you to feel more comfortable taking back control of your child's plate.

So what is it that Kelly Dorfman is trying to show us? She is trying to open our eyes to the connections between food and childhood ailments such as: anxiety, recurrent ear infections, stomachaches, picky eating, rashes, ADHD... and more. She doesn't just say, "This is the problem, now give your child this and everything is okay." She teaches you how to be a nutrition detective on your own, how to make lists in order to keep track of the facts so you can present them reasonably to doctors. How to talk to your doctor about possible deficiencies and/or irritates. She provides cases and studies to present to your doctor about the possibility of a certain food being an issue so you are presenting them with intelligent facts. She is so spot on that she urges you to mark certain areas in the book that you may feel are necessary and to leave it with your doctor. I felt this proved something on its own while also having me realize my mistake of bombarding my doctor with tons of information they are not listening to. Now that I know how they "listen" to the information being thrown at them by a worried Mom like me, I know how to speak to them to provide the necessary facts and possibilities.

Outside of the stories of other families cases regarding food irritants/deficiencies, the most important thing I believe she provides for parents is the most reasonable, easy and emotionally necessary steps to solve picky eating. She does this in a program called E.A.T. I've personally never seen anything like it and after I read the chapter I decided this book was the Holy Grail. What's Eating Your Child? is unlike any other book I've read in the category of food and children and it's a book that you will realize you can't go without. Kelly Dorfman is currently touring with her book and if you live in an area she may be attending, I would certainly go. When food is one of the largest problems we face today with our health we need to support educated Moms like Kelly Dorfman, for our children and our own sake.

Father's Day Recipe: Citrus Slaw

Perhaps you could invite your dad over for some quality time with the family this Father's Day. Start up the grill and prepare some side dishes beforehand. Here's a Citrus Slaw recipe that sounds YUM!

Citrus Slaw: Cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable high in phytonutrients with a good source of sulfur, iodine, vitamin E and vitamin C; Napa cabbage decreases inflammation and is high in vitamin A, folate, vitamin B6 and manganese. Calcium content is higher in the outer leaves.
To make Cole slaw quicker you can purchase pre-shredded cabbage and carrots.
This is a refreshing quick salad for the warmer months.

1 large Napa or green cabbage shredded
½ head red cabbage finely shredded
2 carrots or 1 sweet potato peeled and shredded

Dressing:
¼ cup Orange juice
¼ cup Olive oil
1 Lime juiced
1 Tablespoon Cilantro chopped or parsley
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/8- 1/4 teaspoon honey (optional)

Directions

Place shredded cabbage and carrots in a large bowl.
In a measuring bowl wisk together dressing ingredients and pour over slaw.

Total Transformation Program Review - Part 1

Say Goodbye to Disrespectful, Obnoxious and Abusive Behavior, and Regain Control of Your Child, Your Family & Your Life

"The Total Transformation Program is a step-by-step multimedia program designed to teach parents how to be more effective in James’ no-nonsense, straight-talking style.  The program addresses issues such as backtalk, lying, verbal and physical abuse of parents by kids, over-negotiating, arguing and power struggles."

The Total Transformation Program (the Program) is a parent's program to help manage the challenging behavior (some of experience first hand) in our children. The Program comes with 2 DVDs, 7 CDs and workbook.  The Program is broken down into 7 lessons.

Lesson 1 - Why Does My Child Act This Way? The real causes of obnoxious and abusive behavior.
Lesson 2 - Why Won't My Child Listen to Me? Ineffective parenting roles.
Lesson 3 - Breaking Through. Parenting roles that lead to accountability.
Lesson 4 - Transformation Tools. 27 Tools to change your child's behavior now.
Lesson 5 - Understanding Faulty Thinking. The block to problem solving.
Lesson 6 - What to Do After Your Child Acts Out. The alternative response process.
Lesson 7 - How to Stop It Before It Starts. The trigger management process

This review will focus on the Jump Start (introductory) DVD and Lesson 1 and 2. I will be posting two more reviews on the other Lessons.

Honestly, the Jump Start DVD did nothing for me.  It is an overview of the program and testimonials, which I felt I got from the website. I do believe this is a great start if you had not been on the website researching all of what this Program has to offer. There was also a pre-evaluation in the workbook that you take, which I thought was a good tool to identifying your own situation/inappropriate behavior your child displays.

In Lesson 1, Why Does My Child Act This Way? The real causes of obnoxious and abusive behavior, you will learn about different types of inappropriate behavior and "why" your child behaves this way. You will understand "what" your child has to do to change the inappropriate behavior and know that it is not your fault.

In Lesson 2, Why Won't My Child Listen to Me? Ineffective parenting roles, you will learn that ineffective (but well meaning) roles usually don't promote positive behavior change and that it often supports their obnoxious and abusive behavior. You are given specific strategies to help step out of the ineffective parental role. This is an important first step in changing the child's behavior.

Before starting each lesson, you take a pre-test which takes 5 minutes, if that.  After the pre-test, you listen to the audio lesson (CDs are labeled with each lesson). The CDs are approximately one hour long. After listening to the audio lesson, you are encouraged to complete the corresponding lesson in the workbook.  At the end of each lesson in the workbook, are action steps for you to work on. There is also a post-test you can take now that you have completed the lesson. Once you feel you have mastered the lesson's action steps, you move on to the next lesson.

I was willing to give this program a try. My son gets very angry when some things don't go his way....losing a game on his DS, Xbox, can't go play hockey outdoors, etc. His little (they don't seem so little at the time) outbursts seem to happen when I am trying to do multiple things at one time or he is hungry. Lesson 1 taught me that he always uses the victim stance - nothing is his fault (losing a game on his DS....it is the stupid computer's fault). The other characteristic of his inappropriate behavior is injustice - everything seems unfair (it is unfair that he can't go play hockey with the other boys).

Lesson 2 first (and most importantly) has taught me it is not my fault, but as the parent, I now need to apply specific (more effective) strategies to start changing the inappropriate behavior. While I have been tracking my ineffective parenting style, noting what I wanted to accomplish and what my child actually learned in my workbook, I had my ah-ha moment. I tend to fall into the bottomless pocket (ineffective) role. The one take-away for me, is that my child has learned a false sense of entitlement due to my over-indulges.

Talk about a wake up call.  I suffer from mother guilt (and always have) big time. I have always worked in a very high pressured job that requires working 60 - 80 hours (including working at home in the evenings and weekends) plus travel. What do I do....over indulge. The timing of this program couldn't have been more perfect for me for several reasons.  One such reason, I started a new job which doesn't require travel and my work week will be more like 60 hours not 80 hours. However, there is a price to pay for this change in work....a big pay cut. This means that I will no longer be able to  afford being the bottomless pocket. Now I have to make sure I don't fall into another ineffective parenting role!

So far I am liking this program. An additional benefit to the program is the parental support line. They provide a toll-free number with the program that allows you to call for support. How awesome is that? I have not had to use the support line, but it is nice to know that it is available. Also, I receive via email their newsletter. Now, off to work on lesson 3.

Buy It on-line here, at Total Transformation Program's website for $327 (plus shipping and handling of $19 US and $25 Canada). Take advantage of the limited-time feedback offer, and get The Total Transformation for free by clicking here.

SWEET VALLEY CONFIDENTIAL: Ten Years Later Review & Giveaway {CLOSED}

"Ten years after graduating from Sweet Valley High, the Wakefield twins have had a falling out of epic proportions. When Jessica commits what can only considered a complete and utter betrayal, Elizabeth flees to New York to escape the pain and immerse herself in her lifelong dream of becoming a serious reporter. Things seem to be going well: new job, new friends, new romances, but still there’s a burning anger inside that won’t die.

Jessica remains in California, dealing with the fallout of her heart-wrenching choices and holding onto what semblance of normalcy she can. She has a career she loves and friends she’s known forever, but she misses her sister, her oldest and best friend. Sweet Valley remains the beautiful California home of her youth, but passions are beginning to arise that will likely cause earthquakes in this otherwise peaceful town.

Despite the distance between them, the sisters are never far from each other’s thoughts. Jessica longs for forgiveness, but Elizabeth can’t forget her twin’s duplicity.

Uncharacteristically, she decides the only way to heal her broken heart is to get revenge. Always the “good” twin, the one getting her headstrong sister out of trouble, Elizabeth is now about to turn the tables..."
Growing up, Sweet Valley High was one of my absolute favorite series of books. I followed Elizabeth and Jessica through their high school years and that was that. I never thought much about them through my adult life.

Then one day, I opened up my inbox to a subject line "Do you remember Sweet Valley High?" and just had to open it up and see what that was all about. The fond memories of my youth returning, as if they never went away in the first place. In that email I found that Francine Pascal just couldn't let the characters die off I suppose, and created SWEET VALLEY CONFIDENTIAL: Ten Years Later. I was absolutely ecstatic to be able to get a copy for review.

This was a book I waited patiently for and dug right into the moment that it arrived. I couldn't put it down. It pulled me in, wouldn't let go and took me back to my youth as I remembered some of the character's names. I felt for those moments, almost like a teenage girl again.

Only, I'm not a teenager anymore, nor are Elizabeth and Jessica. We are all grown women and just like I, they have both changed a lot!

Francine told their stories wonderfully, present and even past when she went back to times in their youth. I felt like I was right there with them, as I always did all those years ago. Just like back then, there was drama unfolding. Only, I didn't expect the drama to be that deep. But then again when it comes to Jessica, nothing is much of a surprise.

SWEET VALLEY CONFIDENTIAL: Ten Years Later is a must read for anyone that got into Sweet Valley High. You almost have to see how things have unfolded over the years. I would also recommend this title for the unfamiliar too because it will pull you in!

Schick Intuition Review & Giveaway! {CLOSED}

So I have been missing the boat apparently.  I have been missing out on the not-so-secret secret that there really ARE razors for women that are awesome. It's WORTH it to pay a little more  for a razor that treats your skin well. I am absolutely ashamed to admit that I am a grown woman of 35  years old and up until now I have been using whatever generic bag of razors sits within arms' reach at Target while I zip down the aisle. Why didn't anyone tell me about these?!

These three razors are this years' limited edition handles. Schick just ended a facebook contest where their fans picked next years' limited edition handles.

Regardless of which handle they are using, these razors are incredible! I was skeptical at first- because it sure didn't look like the  razor that I was used to. No, this one has "moisture rich conditioner with shea butter, aloe Vitamin E, and a fourth blade to give you an even closer shave." I instantly noticed a difference  after using these razors- my legs were so much smoother, and I have to admit it was nice not to have to deal with applying shaving cream before I shaved- I know it might seem silly, but I don't  get to take very long showers--so saving me even just a minute here and there adds up!

Besides just having a pretty face, the handle is ergonomic and fits comfortably in your hand. It has a no slip rubber grip on the sides which allows for percise control too. Included is also a handy shower hanger and travel cap. I'm pretty thrilled over this new razor- and have decided that those cheapies are a day of the past.

You can connect with Schick Intuition on Facebook, and  soon on their updated website.

Buy It:
The Schick Intuition Limited Edition is availible in three varities of razor handles and 5 refill varities. Handles: Renewing Moisture with Pomegranate Extract (this was the one I received to review and LOVED it), Moisturizing Care Pack (light pink), and Naturals (blue). Refills: Renewing Moisture with Pomegranate Extract, Advanced Moisture with Shea Butter, Sensitive Care, with Aloe & Vitamin E and Soothing Moisture with Milk & Honey. All are availible at top retailers nationwide for $9.29 (razor), $9.99 for 3 ct, $17.59 for 6 ct. refills. You can usually find coupons in your weekly ads and even on their Facebook page!

National Geographic Kids Almanac 2012 Review & Giveaway! {CLOSED}

The National Geographic Kids Almanac 2012 is the fastest selling kids reference and the world's best selling kids almanac! In fact, it is so great that I had no idea there were any others! The really great thing about this years almanac is that it's completely interactive. At the beginning of each chapter kids will find a code that they can scan with their smartphone (or their parents) which will give them access to extra content, photos, videos, slideshows, fun facts and games. If no smartphone is in sight, there is a link where you can go online to get the extras directly! Throughout the book you''ll also find a little virtual dog named Zipper (He looks like a silly cute chihuahua.) who directs kids to Cool Clicks. These are links for neat fun places online where they can learn more about a subject.

Inside the National Geographic Kids Almanac 2012 you'll find a smorgasbord of knowledge! Amazing Animals (Did you know worms can grow 100 ft?), Cool Inventions (There is a plane that flies on traditional batteries!), World Cultures (Salt was once used as money, I could have been rich.) and so much more. There is even a section for How to Write the Perfect Essay! I directed my son to this page and he took the book away from me and hid in his room with it, no doubt checking out all the fun games it has. In fact he loved the almanac so much it was hard to sneak it back from him so I could review it myself!

With Homework Help sections and even Science Projects, this is a book we'll be opening time and time again. My son absolutely LOVED this book. I did too, once I was able to wrestle it away from him! You will find yourself amerced in so many different interesting facts and fun things to do that it makes it the perfect Family book and something we love to discuss at the kitchen table. Go get your own National Geographic Kids Almanac 2012 and see for yourself how absolutely entertaining learning can be with your children.

Five Questions For Summer College Prep from Harlan Cohen

Going away to college is a huge thing. For some kids, it may be the very first time ever leaving home. You may worry about what's going to happen to them in the "real world" and worry about what kind of influences they will have around them. While that is totally natural, you really need to be careful about how you approach that subject because it could totally backfire in your face if you're not careful! Harlan Cohen, author of the bestselling college guide The Naked Roommate and parent college guide The Happiest Kid on Campus has some tips to help ease that transition for you. Don't grill them with 20 questions, but instead find a comfortable time and place to have this discussion, perhaps weekend road trip, shopping trip, manicure, ballgame or something of the like.

Five Questions For Summer College Prep

1.    What would be your PERFECT first year in college?
This is about creating expectations. Without any expectations, students will just plop on campus and wait for everything to happen (also makes it easier to do unhealthy and regrettable things)
2.    How do you plan on making this happen?
Try to get your son or daughter thinking about the activities, organizations, and opportunities available outside the classroom that help make them find connections to campus life.
3.    Who are the people on campus who can help?
Have them think of five types of people who they can turn to for advice. These should be people who want them to win.
4.    How much time are you going to give yourself to make it ALL happen?
Plant the seed that it can take a couple of years – not weeks or months – to make it happen. Help them set a realistic timeline, otherwise they’ll be set up for disappointment.
5.    What can I do to help?
By asking, this sends a message that you are willing to help, but don’t assume they will need your help. Then go make plans to send lots of care packages (STUDENTS LOVE CARE PACKAGES)

Harlan Cohen is a bestselling author, nationally syndicated advice columnist (Help Me, Harlan!) and professional speaker who has visited over 400 college campuses. He has been featured as an expert in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe and The Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition, and has been a guest on numerous radio and television shows, including NBC’s Today Show.
