"Emily Watts just wants a weekend break from the workaholic hours she's taken on to keep her business — a popular fashion-snark web site — up and running. What she gets is overnight celebrity and a career-killing media scandal.
While taking time out to attend a concert in support of friend Jesse Cinder, a struggling musician, Emily meets Cory Sampson, the lead singer of a chart-topping rock band. When she agrees to a date with Cory, making entertainment headlines is the last thing she expects. Even so, it's a minor surprise by comparison to her discovery that in the music world, media notoriety trumps all. Tabloid allegations erupt when Cory and fame-hungry Jesse use Emily for personal gain, and her tarnished image spells disaster — personally and professionally. To save the web site and writing career she's made her life and dream, Emily must go from being a pawn in the Hollywood headline game to becoming the media mastermind."
I was able to review Rock Star's Girl by J.F. Kristin on Seaside Book Nook. I LOVED it. I am a big fan of Chick Lit and Rock Star's Girl is great chick lit! I was pulled into Em's world right away from the start. She is one smart chick, but struggles when in come to two men....Jessie and C-Span. You will just have to read it to find out who wins the struggle (besides Emily!!). Now I am thrilled to bring you an interview with JFK (and a great giveaway)!
J.F. Kristin (Jennifer) has been writing since the day she picked up a navy blue Crayola as a toddler and began scribbling on her parents' freshly painted white walls. When not writing novels, she writes about both writing and ecommerce, and previously spent a number of years as a freelance promotional writer and web designer for musicians. In the early days of the Web, she ran the Society for Preventing Parents from Naming Their Children Jennifer (SPPNTCJ), a tongue-in-cheek web site that welcomed millions of visitors during its run, received coverage from print, broadcast, and online media, was included in an academic textbook, and was studied on a college course. Her own college studies included completing an honors Bachelor of Journalism degree and a Master of Arts degree in English. She is currently at work on her second novel.
Favorite color, food, drink and animal?
My favorite color is this amazing shade of blue the sky in L.A. turns sometimes. I know that probably sounds funny to anyone who thinks of L.A. as smoggy, but there are a lot of days when I'll be outside and look up to see the most vibrant blue sky you can imagine. For food, this has to be apples, followed closely by pretty much anything that's a breakfast food. My choice of drink goes along with this, since it's coffee with vanilla Coffee Mate. It's how I start my day, every day! And my favorite animal is definitely my dog, Pico, and also dogs in general. They are pure joy, sunshine, and love.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Lots of Kundalini yoga, hiking, playing with my dog, checking out concerts and comedy shows, and catching up on reading is on this list. I'm also a big fan of spending time with friends at the beach or by a pool when it's warm out, or meeting up with friends for dinner or frozen yogurt.
When/Why did you start writing?
I was a very talkative kid, so I'm pretty sure writing was just another way for me to keep talking when I was little. No, I'm kidding. I've been writing since I could pick up a crayon. There was never really a why for writing – it's just something that I've always done. Before I could write the stories down myself, I'd tell them to my parents. When I was older, I would spend evenings, weekends, and school summer vacations writing stories down on paper, or typing them out. It's something that I've always loved to do, and it's the one thing I can do for 15 or more hours in a day, every day, and still absolutely love it.
Where/When do you feel most comfortable writing?
I'm most comfortable writing at home, either sitting on my bed or on my couch with my laptop in front of me. If I have a day where I'm stuck, though, I'll change this up so instead of typing, I'll just start speaking scenes and record them using the voice memos app on my iPhone, or I'll take my laptop or a printout of a few chapters to a coffee shop. My favorite time to write used to be very late at night, when it seemed like the world was just mine, with nobody else awake. For the last year or two, though, my favorite time to write has been very early in the morning.
Have you ever been inspired by another author? If so, who?
Every author I meet inspires me in some way. The author community that exists online is absolutely wonderful. I've been really lucky to be part of such an enthusiastic, friendly, and helpful group. In terms of writing, I'm inspired by every author whose book I read. I learn from pretty much everything I read, whether it's noticing how an author approaches getting a reader right into the sights, sounds, and scents of a scene, or how they paint emotions and weave stories with their words.
Is it hard to let the characters go once you complete a novel?
I'd compare completing a novel with going on a year-long road trip with some of your closest friends. While you truly love them, after that much time in close quarters, you're probably ready for at least a day or two apart to catch up with other people or to meet new characters. After a short break, though, I do like to play with the idea of visiting the characters again at a different time in their lives.
Where does your inspiration for a story come from?
There really isn't one particular place. It can be dreams or daydreams, musings leading to imagined scenarios after observing or hearing about situations people have encountered, or inspiration from a feeling I'll get hearing a song. These are just a few examples. Inspiration usually starts with one scene, and the rest evolves from there.
Do you have a favorite author? Who?
My all-time favorite author is Michael Ondaatje. I was first drawn into his work about twelve years ago, when I picked up In the Skin of a Lion. My favorite novel of his is Anil's Ghost, though. There's so much going on in that novel, on so many levels, it astounds me as both a reader and an author.
