After witnessing a horrible accident we then understood the urgent need for umbrella safety. It was then that we started a grassroots movement to raise awareness about the problem. Like all mothers in need we developed a simple device to anchor our umbrella. This enabled us to provide sun protection for our small children without the fear of our umbrella blowing away . Unfortunately, everyday countless umbrellas are blowing down the beach. We would like to see all umbrellas properly anchored for the safety, convenience and enjoyment of all beach goers.

It's becoming that time of year, especially in the south, summer is speeding towards us! Once spring hit, my skin starts humming in anticipation of going to the beach. And, lucky us, we live only a couple of hours away and plan to take many day trips this summer. But, with the approaching summer, there is always the risk of summer ailments and dangers, especially at the beach. One danger I had never considered is the run away beach umbrella. It might sound silly, but, once the wind has taken your beach umbrella, it's more like a heavy plastic spear.

The Noblo Umbrella Buddy was created by two moms, Bess Abraham and Kathleen Pisanoa, after being witness to a horrible fly away umbrella accident on a Jersey beach. Determined to find a product to keep families safe, they created The Noblo, a vinyl bag that attaches with velcro to your umbrella to keep it weighed down. It's just as easy to use as it sounds! While you or another adult secures the umbrella in the sand, have the kiddies help fill the bag with sand. Once filled, attach the strap above the umbrella's spokes. Finally, place the bag away from the umbrella, preferably in the direction the wind is coming from. And that's it! Once your day is done at the beach, simply dump the sand back out, fold the Noblo flat, and stick it in your beach bag! We keep ours in the actual sleeve to the umbrella.

A few fast facts about The Noblo Umbrella Buddy
  • USA made; Manufactured in New Jersey
  • Packaged in Eatontown, New Jersey CVR; a local non-profit organization which hires mentally & physically handicapped individuals
  • Portions of profits from each bag sold is donated to United States Lifesaving Association
  • You can find a color to match your umbrella: Black, Blue, Bright Green, Pink, Turquoise or Yellow

Not only do I feel safe having my umbrella at the beach, I can feel good each time I use it knowing it's made a big impact for some many different people's lives!

I have had the usual - running down the umbrella on the beach.

My nephew decided to feed the sea gulls. After a little while I felt like I was in Alfred Hitchcock's Birds. My nephew was screaming and I couldn't get ride of them. We ran from the beach. That too happened at a Jersey beach!

Luckily, all our beach accidents have been seagull related!

There were several times that I was walking back to our blanket and watched the umbrella lift out of the sand and fly away.

I'm always afraid of the umbrellas, so I never do it...but I swear I can't remember how many times Hubby has gone running down the beach to retrieve towels!

hazelpex said...

I avoid umbrellas at the beach because of this blow-away problem, so this would be a great product to have. My mishaps have been just as frustrating though, towels flying in the wind!

I once had an incident at the beach where there was a picnic area and somehow, a hot piece of coal was in the beach area, I didn't see it, stepped on it in the center of my foot and it burned forever. I ended up in E.R, infection and pain for the longest time

Christina - xristya@rock.com - When I was 16 I had hair down to my waist and fell asleep on the beach. Some boys (I was lying on my stomach), as a prank, came up and cut off a bunch of my hair with scissors - I awoke and was so disheartened - it never grew that long again and of course I had to get it cut short then!

No real incidents, as I haven't really been to the beach in years (despite living in south florida for 17 years). I grew up and we'd go to the beach when I was a very little kid but my parents HATED the sand getting in their car after our trip so we stopped going and I started hating the beach. The best part of a beach for me is during sunset now :)
