Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny telekinetic powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control as their darker sides begin to take over. What starts out as fun and games quickly becomes dangerous and they must face the inevitable question of whether they can handle the responsibility that comes with their remarkable powers.
Chronicle debuted during Superbowl this past February and I really don’t think it got all the media attention it deserved. It’s an extraordinary movie about how power trips the human psyche as three teenagers find themselves developing powers without the responsibility to control them.
There is something very authentic to Chronicle. Although it is another ‘found footage’ movie (my son loves this style), it is unique in that it doesn’t exasperate the superhero role or run off into an area of unbelievability. I found myself captured by the stories of these best friends, who lead ordinary lives before they slowly become immersed into their abilities. Although they all abuse them in small amusing ways, understandably the one who has the difficult home life begins to lose his morality with his powers and it is a wild ride.
