My kindergarten class brings in a TON of supplies. Many things I don't ask for and didn't really want - like markers. But the kids love them, so they use them in the Art center. As with every other supply, the students never take care of them the way they should. So of course, I end up with a zillion dried out useless markers.
Not any more! Ok, they still end up dried out, but now at least they aren't useless! Now you can make your own watercolor paint!
All you need is:
- cups (plastic and disposible)
- water
- dried out markers grouped by color
- water tight container for storage
Step 1: you sort your markers by color. I used 6-8 of each color - the rule is the more markers the deeper the color turns out. For example, I didn't have as many reds - so my red is more pink.
Step 2: you uncap your markers and put them tip down in a cup. Again, one cup for each color.
Step 3: add water and let sit all day or over night.
Step 4: remove markers and pour liquid into an air-tight container. It will keep for a good while!
Step 5: get creative! You can use a paint brush and paper just like the store bought kind. You can use it to dye paper or maybe yarn?
I used mine to dye coffee filter flowers for a school bulletin board! Look for a tutorial on the coffee filter flowers next week!!
Happy Crafting!

This is a great idea, I use watercolors all the time and have a ton of dried out markers I hate to just throw away. Thanks so much for sharing!
Luv the idea. My grandchildren have a huge craft box. Things get dumped and because I'm in a wheel chair it is hard to look under things when they get dropped. They get found later all dried. What a waste, not anymore. Thanks.

What a great idea. I saw a tutorial on a coffee filter wreath where they painted them but to dye them would be great. Thanks for the tip!

Fantastic idea. I never thought I can do anything with dried markers. They dry so fast and what a waste. This is definitely worth trying.
I do all the art docent housekeeping for our school and end up with well over 100 markers dried out at the end of the year--this is a great idea for getting all that we can out of them!
A green idea. I always have dried out markers. I alrready love the coffee filter flowers.
