Night Buddies revolves around the nighttime adventures of a young boy named John, who is not ready to go to sleep, and a bright red crocodile named Crosley who turns up under John’s bed.
I’ve heard that some children like to sleep, especially in their own bedrooms and some even sleep through the night. It was a shock to me and, to be honest, I want in on it! So, we’ve been trying each tip in the book, but nothing seems to work. I finally realized, my little guy is as much of a story teller as I am! In fact, he regales me with a brand new adventure story each day, so, why wasn’t I returning the favor? I’m not quick on my feet when I’m tired, so I’m thankful for all those wonderfully already written stories out there!
Night Buddies and the Pineapple Cheesecake Scare is an amazing adventure written by Sands Hetherington with help from his son, John, who also happens to share the name with the main character in the book. In fact, it would be after months of shared bedtime stories, that the two would develop the character, Crosley, who is a red crocodile (the only kind in the world, but, I won’t spoil as to why!) who suddenly appears under John’s bed! The two set out on a Program (the Night Buddies’ word for adventure) to solve a mystery of why Crosley’s most favorite thing in the world, Pineapple Cheesecakes, are disappearing! Their Program takes them on a journey, filled with tomfoolery and plenty of amazing gadgets, to Big Foot Mae, the biggest woman you’ll ever see, who also happens to be the only maker of Pineapple Cheesecakes! Will they ever find out what is going on?

What I enjoy the most about this book is the engaging fonts on each page. They change with what is happening in the story, such as emotion or a happenstance that John and Crosley find themselves in. It becomes very engaging to a young child’s eyes, especially when they’re only two and a half! The artwork by Jessica Love bring another dimension to help keep focus on the story, while enhancing it at the same time.
Although my two year old is enjoying the book, I think the best age for this story would be 6 and up. We can’t sit still or focus too long at two, so it’s taking awhile for us to get through the story and we sometimes have to go back and start over where ever he seems to remember last, but, that’s okay, because the plot is great and I don’t mind rereading it!
If you have a child who is desperate not to go to sleep, then Night Buddies and the Pineapple Cheesecake Scare might be the perfect nighttime caper to help them unwind and fill their dreams with red crocodiles, pineapples, and sweet little boys with the biggest browns eyes ever!
