Dassant Premium Baking Mixes all began with an idea in 1980 after creator and founder, Scotty Mac, spent a very long afternoon baking dozen of loaves of his famous and highly requested Classic Beer Bread. He realized there had to be a better way to market the easy to make bread to his customers. For a few years, Mac pushed his beer bread towards his local gourmet food stores (who requested daily orders) and wholesale bakers (who turned him down, worried about the bakers and cold beer mixing). In 1986, the real work began, when Mac convinced a local catalog company with national distributors, to sell his beer bread as a mix, instead of ready made loaves, for families to make at home. With the help from friends and family, the business started to really take off and Mac started to add new mix recipes, first came the Truffle Brownie Mix, followed by cookies, cakes, scones, and dessert breads. Since then, Dassant has become a well trusted and family name, with true staying power!
As you all know by now, my family loves to cook and bake. Sonshine has a huge sweet tooth, which can get him into trouble on some days. I’ve been trying to cut back on his sweets consumption, since we’re entering in the candy and treats season, but I have to admit, I was drooling on the keyboard when Dassant offered me the opportunity to review a few of their amazing mixes! We each got to pick a flavor, Hubby picked the Classic Beer Bread, Sonshine chose the Truffle Brownie Mix, and I opted for the Vanilla Bean Cake Mix. We opted to start off with the Beer Bread mix and I made asked my husband to make it, since he picked it. I had a reason for this, after reading the directions, I knew that even my baking incapable husband could make it. And he did great! He was actually very surprised at how simple it was, he used one bowl and a bread pan and that was it. The bread itself was delicious. We used a light beer and got to enjoy a moist, slightly crumbly bread, which had this amazing flavor profile. I cannot wait to purchase another box!
We also have made the Truffle Brownie Mix and in all my years of baking box and from scratch brownie mixes, this one takes the cake! It was rich, without being too heavy, and decadent with the pieces of chocolate scattered throughout the mix. And the texture, is out of this world. They’re cake like and fudge like all at the same time, without being too chewy or crumbly. I’m serious. These are ‘smack your mama, throw out grandma’s homemade brownie recipe good‘. My only complaint? It’s not offered in a double batch box. (hint, hint)
Unfortunately, we have not had the time to try the final mix we got, the Vanilla Bean Cake. My birthday is in a couple of weeks and I tend to bake my own cake, so that’s going to be my treat to myself!
