As most of you know, we moved into a completely gutted fixer-upper last summer. After and entire month of non-stop renovation in the back of the house, we were finally able to move in. The renovations didn’t stop there, because we are still working on the house. While most of the “major” projects are done, there’s still quite a lot to do. We still have to finish the ceiling in our office/den, do the floor as well as window trim in that room, my bedroom and the kitchen.
During our renovations, I wish we had been able to shop at a store like Floor and Decor. They have low price flooring and offer porcelain, ceramic, stone, tile, wood and laminate flooring options. I found some really nice laminate flooring that looks so much like real hardwood. It would look great in our office/den!
The look of their store is a home improvement junkie’s dream! It’s like a huge warehouse where you can browse and physically touch all of the stuff. I could spend hours in a store like this! But, since I am in Wisconsin and they don’t have a Floor and Decor store near me, I had to do the next best thing, browse online.
My next personal project is going to be my kitchen. We already re-did the hardwood floor and had to do new counter tops before we could move in because what was on them couldn’t even be considered a counter top. It was basically plywood with that sticky shelving paper on it, gross! Since counter tops can be pricey enough and a full kitchen reno wasn’t in the budget, we had to improvise and use the old cabinets. After a good cleaning up, they really didn’t look half bad though!
I have so many great ideas for my kitchen though and it will all start with a new paint color for the walls and re-doing the existing cabinets. I’m going to get a kit to paint them an antique white as that is the look that I just love. Then I’ll re-do the hardware and add a backsplash. I found the best selection in tiles at Floor and More and just fell in love with the Marsala Brick Mosaic Glass Tile shown above. As soon as I saw this tile, my complete kitchen vision formed! Funny how that happens, huh?
Could you use a kitchen re-do?
Remodeling a kitchen or any other room in your house is really so much simpler than you think. Yes, it does take some time, but the pride you will have when you look at the wonderful job that you did alone is well worth that time and effort! I’ve included some tips below that you can do yourself to create a brand new look!
- Freshen up the room with a new paint color.
- You can give cabinets a quite update and create a whole new look by painting them or buying a kit to re-surface them.
- Add a backsplash. This will create a whole new look and freshen things up! Make sure to chose a backsplash that goes with your paint, counter top and cabinet color.
- Add new hardware. You’d be surprised at the difference new hardware can make! These are super simple to install yourself too!
