Night Buddies, Impostors and One Far-Out Flying Machine is one of the most unique kid’s books I’ve had the pleasure to review! Night time and reading go hand in hand and what better story to tell your children before bed than one about a boy, a bright red crocodile named Crosley and their amazing night time adventures.
Night Buddies revolves around the nighttime adventures of a young boy named John, who is not ready to go to sleep, and a bright red crocodile named Crosley who turns up under John’s bed. As the stories in each book open, this unlikely pair sneaks out of John’s house using Crosley’s I-ain?t-here doodad, which makes them invisible to John’s parents. They embark on their Program, the Night Buddies word for Adventure, and make their way around the Borough chasing down enemies and cleaning up the mishaps at hand.
The Pineapple Cheesecake Scare is the first of the series and was about John and Crosley finding out why all the pineapple cheesecakes in the world have gone missing. In Night Buddies, Impostors and One Far-Out Flying Machine, John and Crosley are set on stopping the Crocodiles that are posing as Crosley’s and making a mess of everything. With a fantastic flying machine, a completely insane scheme to catch the impostors and a lot of Crusted Creme Fro-Madge frozen yogurt, they prove anything is possible.
I think one of the most unique things about Night Buddies (outside of the fact that there are friendly talking crocodiles) is that it has it’s own unique style of writing. In the beginning it explains how the books are written the way that they talk. You can get an idea of style from watching the video above. While reading it, it is very much like hearing John and Crosley talking back and forth and gives a whole new level of imagination.
I read this with my son a little bit each day. He really likes Crosley and the amusing sounds and words they have for laughing. Yerk Yerk! Night Buddies is more for older readers, but it is really exciting if you take the time to read it to little tots. Although you may want to speed past the part about how the Crocodiles only come to go on adventures when the kids don’t want to sleep.
