The Fruit Company started, like all good things do, with a dream and a lot of hard work. Before there even was The Fruit Company, there was Roy Webster, born at the turn of the century when just about anything was possible. While on his honeymoon, he and his bride Olive toured the lush Hood River valley of northern Oregon. This, they happily vowed, was one day going to be their home. The rest, as they say, was history. Years later, in 1942, they returned and acquired 600 acres of prime land – called Webster Orchards – and soon were producing over 340 acres of fruit including more Comice pears than anyone else in the valley. Always the entrepreneur, Roy launched a mail-order service that sent Webster pears and apples, or, as he called them, “Oregon Gems” and “Oregon Beauties”, across the region for just $7.50 a bushels.
Their son Wayne was only five years old when Webster Orchards became a reality. Together with his dad, and later on his own, he was integral in managing and promoting the operation in the Hood River Valley and taking it to its next level of success.
With Father’s Day in less than a week, it’s becoming a mad dash and head scratching panic to find the right gift for that great guy in your life. I personally never know what to get for my husband, he’s the worst person to shop for. I finally figured out, what’s rarely turned down by most men, is anything related to food! And lucky for us, we were able to review a great Father’s Day gift straight from The Fruit Company.
The Father’s Day Gift Tower is not just a gift for the dad’s in your life, but a nice little something you can share with the whole family! Our box arrived during the torrential down pour caused by the first tropical storm of the season rushing in. My husband and the delivery guy met half way across the lawn and both Hubby and the box were soaked in thirty seconds. Worried about the insides, we opened the dripping box and were delighted to find everything inside was dry and in one piece! Both Hubby and Sonshine stared at the boxes, wide eyed, so it was time to open them!
The top of the tower held what I consider to be the treats! The Bellows House Bakery Brownie was rich and indulgent. It was moist and chewy with a great fudge taste. My little guy thought I had made a pan of brownies and went in search of them in the kitchen, that’s how wonderfully fresh it tastes! The Gourmet Mixed Nuts have your usual suspects, like walnuts, all mixed with California Sea Salt. Hubby claimed these for his own to enjoy with a beer or two,
And what’s a The Fruit Company gift without some fruit? Included in our tower were two Fuji apples the size of my kid’s head and just as sweet, and six D’Anjou Pears. I was grateful that the pears arrived in their own little squishy sleeves so their skins wouldn’t bruise on delivery! The apples are long gone, but I still have a few pears left, some cheese, and some mixed nuts. I’m going to dice up the pears and cheese and toss them in an endive salad, along with the chipotle cheese and some vinaigrette! A delicious, but most definitely ‘manly’ salad!
If you’re still looking for a Father’s Day treat, then look no further! Dad might just drool over this delicious and healthy tower of goodies!
