When my kids finally got to the age where they could take in solid food, yogurt was my go to snack. I'm glad I gave it to them at such a young age. They truly love it now that they're a little older. It provides them with extra calcium, protein, and those good bacteria help ward off flu-bugs. I'm a strong believer in if you start healthy eating habits young, they will carry through when you get older.
My family had the privilege to try an amazing "skyr" yogurt. What is "skyr," you may be asking?
Skyr is the traditional yogurt of Iceland. It is made by incubating skim milk with live active cultures. The whey, the water naturally found in milk, is then strained away to make for a much thicker, creamier, concentrated yogurt. To make just one cup of skyr, with all that water going out, you need 3-4 times the amount of milk required to make a regular cup of yogurt. As a result of this process, skyr contains 2-3 times the protein count of standard yogurt.
The story of siggi's dairy starts in New York City during the holiday season of 2004. Siggi Hilmarsson was for the first time in his life not going back to Iceland to spend the holidays with his family. Feeling homesick and missing a staple of his childhood diet, he digs up some old articles and recipes for skyr, the traditional yogurt of Iceland, sent to him by his mother. Undaunted by the articles' arcane measurement system and his total lack of relevant measuring devices, Siggi makes his first batch of skyr in his kitchen. READ MORE...
What an amazing story of how Siggi's was founded! Loyalty to what was loved and determination to get it in other families hands! Our family sure loved it!
The first thing I noticed when I tried the Raspberry was how thick it was. It almost has a greek yogurt consistency. The flavor was subtle and sweetened lightly, which I really liked!
I couldn't believe how many flavors you can choose from: Strawberry, Raspberry, Peach, Orange & Ginger, Blueberry, Acai & Mixed Berry, Pomegranate & Passionfruit, Plain, and Vanilla. Plus they have 2% rjoma-skyr in Plain, Mango & Pineapple, Coconut, and Pumpkin & Spice. Rjoma-skyr is a little different than skyr.
Since skyr is fat-free it has been an age old practice to throw a bit of cream back into it for a tad richer touch: generally called rjóma-skyr; or skyr with cream. Delicious!
My kids absolutely loved the tubes! In fact I put them in the freezer, and they enjoyed them this way. We received the Strawberry, Raspberry, and Blueberry Tubes. My son loved the Strawberry and my daughter really like the Raspberry.
A few more of the products that Siggi's offers is the Filmjolk which is Swedish-style drinkable yogurt, and the Probiotic, which is a non-fat drinkable yogurt.
I wish I heard about Siggi's when my kids were toddlers! This company has and is known for simple ingredients, and not a lot of sugar. In fact that's their slogan!
